A reader recently submitted submitted a question via Ask Evangelism Coach section.
Recently my church has formed an evangelism outreach group. The group consists of two members and myself. I am leading the evangelism ministry but am new to this and although my drive and desire is strong…I’m not sure where to begin or how to “train.” I’ve done a lot of studying but want to prepare as best as I can. What are your suggestions?
I’d like to start the conversation this way.
Choose an initial focus.
You might have a team, a committee, a commission, or some other name for your group. But the first question to ask is
Where does your committee want to start?
Evangelism Outreach means so many different things in a church — just what is it for your church?
1. Hospitality ministry / Visitor Assimilation — this focuses on generating visitor traffic (marketing), welcoming visitors to church and creating first impressions, and then follow up processes with assimilation. The focus here is marketing and creating a good experience and is not centered on proclaiming the gospel. Rather it has a supporting role.
2. Outreach — Focus on creating events where the public can come, or events where the church serves the local community, the focus being on providing a context for which invitations to church and discussions of faith can occur. Missional events could fall under this category.
3. Personal Evangelism training — a group that is focused and committed to sharing their faith and holding each other accountable on weekly basis.
If your committee is simply starting out, pick an area to focus and grow. The others can be added or other committees or teams can get organized.
