I realize that $300 is really inexpensive in the modern scale of things, but for a small church it’s an enormous amount. We are already struggling to meet our budget, are exactly the kind of church that needs your help, but can’t afford it. Any ideas?

I do have some ideas for you. Almost all of the tools that I use for web design (especially wordpress) are free, and there are some good tutorials out there too. If you have someone in your church willing to spend a little time studying, I can make some recommendations on where to start.
That said, I realize that sometimes small churches don’t have the time to sift through tutorials, and even good tutorials can sometimes be hard to follow for those who aren’t technically inclined.
The $300 I charge is mostly for the custom design–that’s what takes up the largest chunk of time to do. But there are thousands of pre-designed wordpress “themes” (think of wordpress like a body, and the themes as clothes you put on it) out there that can still look good for a church website. If all a church needs is hosting, setting up wordpress with a pre-designed theme, and they’re willing to do all of the content-writing for the website, I’ve often done arrangements for significantly less than $300.
