I would also seek the opportunity to share with her the ways I have called on God to protect my children from the "thief who comes in the night", and share some examples from Scripture where parents sought Jesus to heal their children, and how He drove out the demons, etc. I would invite her to compare the "work" she feels she has to do to appease the god of the alligator, with the gift she can receive from Jesus, who will offer protection to her children simply because He loves them, not based on what she can give.
