Debriefing an Evangelism Conversation

Do you want to grow in your skill in talking about your faith?

One discipline that I use that helps me grow comfortable in talking about my faith is through writing in a journal.

I do an mental review of nearly every evangelistic conversation that I have and write about it in my journal.

It’s a good practice to follow, and will help you in the future.  It has been a practice that has been deeply beneficial in my life, particularly in removing fear from my practice of personal evangelism.

Here are 10 questions I like to ask myself or the people I’m training:

  1. “How did God point out that person to you?”
  2. “Where did you notice God was already at work?”
  3. “What was the other person’s spiritual thirst?”
  4. “What would you do differently if you could do this over?”
  5. “What did you share about Christ and the gospel?”
  6. “How did they start the conversation that gave you the clue they wanted to go deeper?”
  7. “What question might you have asked to magnify that spiritual thirst?”
  8. “What question might have opened the door further for more conversation?”
  9. “How would you resume this discussion next time you encounter this person or this topic?”
  10. “How did the other person express their spiritual thirst?  Did they know it was a spiritual need?”

There are thousands of variants on these questions.  But by taking the time to review each potentially evangelistic encounter and every conversation, I become aware of where I need to grow and where I need to pray.
