Postmodern Evangelism–Find Your Story

Part of the art of post-modern evangelism is story telling, in particular, telling your own story of how you came to discover your faith.
The Christian Testimony
Shortly after I became a Christian in the late 80s, I learned a phrase “Your Testimony.”
Your Christian testimony describes

How you came to start following Christ in a conversion experience,
The process [...]

Experiencing a Christian Conversion

Last night, I watched a deeply powerful film.
Note: Over the last few days and into next week, I’ll be sharing some thoughts on postmodernism and evangelism.  To keep the articles readable and short, they are spread out over a few days.  Grab the RSS feed to get new articles automatically.

8 Steps to Use Your Personal Testimony

Each Christian has a personal story of how he/she came to know Jesus in a personal, life-changing way.
You can use your personal testimony to spread the Gospel of Christ.  Make sure you avoid the cheesy clichés – be authentic.
1.  Use your testimony.
You have both current stories of God’s work in your life, as well [...]

Talk about Jesus without Freaking Out

What is the gospel?
An ex-Christian friend of mine turned to me and said
“Chris, what is the gospel?”
Excitement bubbled up within me.  I’m an evangelist and this conversation was near and dear to my heart.  However, I got too excited.
The end result was confusing half thoughts, and verbal commas: “bluh, bluh, um, uh, it’s ah, [...]

One of my loyal readers (via RSS feed) wrote an interesting post:
Today, I had coffee with a friend of mine who said, “I don’t believe that it is my responsibility to share the gospel.” He just wanted to live his life in such a way that people would be attracted to that example and hopefully [...]

Respecting Boundaries in Conversation

This weekend, one of my friends shared with  me a first hand story about an evangelistic encounter he had.
I found myself encouraged as I listened to it.  Here is a one who gets the idea of cooperating with the work of the Holy Spirit.
I’ve retold the story here for your thoughts and for your [...]

Grow from Witness to Evangelist

Most of my evangelism training occurs in mainline churches, where many people equate evangelism with Hospitality or Service Projects.  Neither one is evangelism per se (For example see, Is Neighborhood Outreach Evangelism?)
In that same area, there is a marked hesitancy to discuss your faith.  That could be for a variety of reasons, many of which have been [...]

Alaska Evangelism Dunamis Report

This past week, I’ve had fun with some new friends in Palmer Alaska, while teaching The Evangelism Dunamis.
One of the joys I get in my travels as an evangelism trainer is meeting new people all over the country.
Pastors from various denominations and gifted lay ministers.
At this conference, new mission outreaches were launched as well [...]

A divine appointment is recognizing God’s prompting a moment that will impact someone’s life in their jourey to faith.  These are kairos moments.
I want to give you examples of how this can play out in real life.

Seminar Testimony

Our primary model in our seminars for doing personal evangelism is Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch.
The basic premise:
When God "underlined" the eunuch for Phillip, (with "Go stand next to THAT chariot"), Phillip obeyed and found a spiritually thirsty person.  Phillip then began a conversation that lead to the eunuch coming to faith.
Our model is [...]

Here is an interesting way to get your testimony out there:

The general premise: Visit the website, listen to the testimony, fill out a few questions, and indicate if you "prayed the prayer."

Personal Testimony Questionnaire

Some people find it hard to talk about their personal Christian testimony or faith journey with Christ.
It could be that you have never been asked, or it could be that you’ve not taken the time to think it through. You simply know that you follow Jesus.
This questionnaire can help you grow comfortable in talking about [...]

Evangelism as Storytelling

One church, Solana Beach Presbyterian in Solana Beach California, has and effective small group ministry.  One thing they are doing a little different this year is using the small groups to help people grow comfortable in doing evangelism — a place to practice telling their stories –
“stories that testify to why they have put their [...]
