“Where do you go to church?” inquires the barber cutting my hair.
I’m sitting in the barber’s chair, getting the personal haircut that has been needed since the last day I left that chair nearly 3 months ago. I try my best to get the same barber every time to nurture a contact relationship.
The inquiry seems “out of the blue.” He had been asking me how have I been, how has life been going, etc, typical small talk between two acquaintances who have not seen each other in a few months.
“Let me ask you this, where do you go to church?” he asked.
The back story
Readers of this blog know that I’ve been writing the 30 days of prayer series (which is taking more than 30 days since writing is much slower).
I’ve been doing it myself, praying every day for the harvest field, and praying every day for the Lord to let me plant a seed somewhere.
At the same time, we are currently involved in a church plant in the city in which we live. We are launching a a new sermon series this weekend, so momentum is high for prayer towards that date.
In other words, I have some circumstances in my life that a 30 day prayer series fits. I’ve been praying for the harvest field, and praying for the opportunities to invite people to church.
“I need to go to church”
Having recently been praying for seed planting moments or divine appointments, I was sensitive enough to notice.
I noticed his body language, his tone of voice.
I asked him if and where he attended church, and the response was
“No where. I just need to go.”
I left him with the details of our Sunday service. (I wished I had a church business card).
It wasn’t the time or the place to go much further or deeper. He works for his employer and had finished cutting my hair and to go beyond our time would be to impose something on his employer.
However, I can add him to the list of friends I’m praying for and expect to see him on Sunday.
What’s your story?
If you are taking the 30 days of prayer series to heart, send me your story. I want to hear it. You might have a:
- Particular prayer experience
- A random conversation that went deep to spiritual issues
- A friend who asks you about your relationship with Christ
- A chance to invite a friend to church.
I want to hear about it. Drop me an email here and let me know if I can share your story as we walk through this together.
